The Process

Backstory’s guided process breaks through the barriers standing in the way of documenting family history and meaningful stories.

While I help people document their experiences to share with loved ones, I’ve discovered the real magic happens to the storyteller. With a skilled listener and guide by their side, I’ve seen extraordinary things unfold. Patterns emerge. Connections spark. They think “I’ve never thought of it that way before!”

Documenting life stories does more than preserve memories. It transforms experiences into insight, helping understand not just what happened — but why it mattered and how it shaped your family member’s life.

Each project is different, but here is the general process:

Step 1: Free Consultation

You reach out to me for a free 20-minute conversation. We’ll meet in person, phone, or Zoom, and you’ll tell me your goals. I’ll explain the process and answer questions, with no obligation or pressure.

Step 2: Project Planning

We define the scope of your project, review existing materials, and create an interview outline. Then we’ll finalize timing and pricing.

Step 3: Interview Sessions

Either in person or via Zoom, we’ll have 60- or 90-minute conversations where I you share stories and I ask guiding questions. Scheduling is flexible based on your schedule and comfort.

Step 4: Writing

When the interviews are finished, I will start the writing. When I’m done, I’ll send you the draft so you can read and provide feedback. I’ll revise accordingly.

Step 5: Design

Once you’ve approved the manuscript, I’ll lay out the book
with your photos and stories.

6. Finish

The process is complete! You will receive two copies of your final story, book, or collection, along with an audio file of the interview sessions and a PDF of the manuscript to keep and share.
